Coming back to school

Written by Anna Li

In March, students came back to school after the holiday. The new term has started but it will take them some time to return to a state of study.

Many students have no idea what to do in the new term, and are still immersed in boring things. For example, they always talk about movies and games during evening study or they sleep in every class. Some of them know they have to concentrate on studying, but they think they are not ready for the new term.

2018 is an important year for us in CSW, because we are going to take the IELTS exam or go to a good university, so it’s necessary to adjust yourself to school life.

Spring Festival

Written by Darcy

Hey! Welcome back to school! l hope you have a nice vacation during the winter holiday. What happened during this period? Yes, we had a Spring Festival.

Where does the Spring Festival come from?

According to one of the most famous story, in ancient China there lived a horned monster named Nian who was extremely terrible. Nian lived deep at the bottom of the sea all year and climbed up to the beach only on New Year's Eve to kill people.

Thereupon on the day of every New Year's Eve people from all the villages would escape, bringing alone the old and the young, to the isolated mountains to avoid the terror caused by the monster Nian. Then, one New Year's Eve, the people of village were getting ready to hide when there came someone from outside the village. An old beggar with a stick in his hand and a bag hanging upon his arm. His eyes twinkled like stars and his beard was silver.

He told people he could save them this year. When Nian came to the village, as he approached the door, there suddenly came the sounds of explosions. Trembling all over, the monster dared not take a step forward. It turned out that red, flames, and explosions were what Nian feared the most. And when the door of the grandmother's house was thrown open and an old man in a red robe burst out laughing in the courtyard, the monster Nian was scared out of his wits and fled helter-skelter.

The reason why we have firecrackers is that red, flames, and explosions were what Nian feared the most. Absolutely, we will wear new red clothes during the Spring Festival. On New Year's Eve, people who work away go home to reunite with their families. They eat a reunion dinner and watch TV. After New Year's Eve, people visit relatives everywhere. When children arrive at an elder’s family, they always receive a red ‘bag’ which contains money.

A gift for the coming semester

Written by Cassie

The winter vocation finally reached its destination at the end of February. For most students, March was like a dream killer ending their beautiful vacation. Unlike during other previous preparatory weeks, our nice math teachers prepared an unpredictable gift for the grade 11 students on the first day they came back to school: a math test. No sooner had the teacher announced this shocking news, the whole class dropped into panic.

The content of this test comprised of the knowledge in pre-calculus 11. In other words, it is quite a challenge for most students. In fact, our teachers didn’t mean to set up such an obstacle to threaten us on purpose. Instead, they want to meet the needs of students by developing the most appropriate teaching plan by understanding what we already know. What is more exciting, they may reduce the amount of homework once they know our capabilities in math.

The next semester is relatively short. However, the burden of teaching doesn’t seem easy. Grade 11 is an important period for us to solidify our knowledge and build an accessible way for entering into our future university.

In this case, do you agree that the math test is a gift for us? And inside this gift, there is an alarm to remind us not to stop on the way forward.
